Corner the market on wild roadside cryptids, offload toxic liabilities onto unsuspecting friends, and see through high-pressure sales pitches in a fast-paced card game of asymmetric information and calculated deceit.
Sell Me a Sasquatch (designed in direct collaboration with the economics team at NPR’s Planet Money and published by Exploding Kittens, LLC, Item #EKG-SMAS-CORE-3) takes complex market dynamics—specifically information asymmetry and the "market for lemons"—and transforms them into a raucous, high-stakes party bluffing game. Players assume the roles of aggressive back-alley traders buying and selling roadside cryptids and dubious investments. The primary gameplay objective centers on score optimization and deal negotiation: players compete to collect matching sets of valuable mythical Creatures while dodging penalty-inducing Nasties, aiming to amass five green reward tokens to win the match.
The primary mechanical hurdle stems from navigating the three-card deal mechanism (two cards placed face-down and one card face-up). Each round, one player acts as the Buyer, while all other players act as Sellers. Each Seller assembles a packaged deal on their "This Is My Deal" mat using two hidden cards and one public card from their hand. The Buyer must survey the market and select exactly one deal to accept, trying to deduce which Seller is offering a genuine bonanza of points-scoring Creatures and who is baiting them with a sweet face-up teaser concealing toxic Nasty penalty cards. The critical catch falls on the Sellers: if the Buyer rejects your deal, you are forced to keep it yourself. Foisting a junk deal that gets rejected leaves you stuck with your own penalties, while failing to entice the Buyer with good cards lets you bank valuable sets. Designed for 2 to 6 players aged 10 and up, an entire wheeling-and-dealing session wraps up in a brisk 15 to 20 minutes. To dominate the cryptid trade, you must read your friends' tells, craft deals that are just tempting enough to take, and never get caught holding a bad batch of Sasquatches.
