Bluff your friends with creepy critters, pass unwanted bugs around the table, and try not to be the unlucky player stuck with four of a kind.
Cockroach Poker (Kakerlakenpoker, designed by Jacques Zeimet and published by Drei Magier Spiele) is a legendary, minimalist card game that strips away traditional winning conditions in favor of pure psychological survival. Despite its name, it shares no mechanics with standard poker aside from deception. The primary gameplay objective centers on defensive bluffing and card avoidance: rather than trying to win points, players pass face-down cards to opponents while declaring a specific pest—such as a cockroach, rat, or stink bug—leaving the recipient to guess whether the statement is true or false, or pass it on.
The primary mechanical hurdle stems from the unique loser-only elimination structure. On your turn, you hand a card face-down to any player, state what critter it is (honestly or as a flat-out lie), and they can either guess your truthfulness or peek at the card and push it onto someone else. If the receiver guesses incorrectly, they collect the card face-up in front of them. The game ends instantly when one player accumulates four cards of the same creature type or runs out of cards to pass on their turn—making that sole player the definitive loser while everyone else wins. Designed for 2 to 6 players aged 8 and up, a delightfully tense session plays out in 20 minutes. To survive the infestation, you must read your friends' poker faces, master the art of the double-bluff, and avoid holding the bag.
