Azul (Junior / Family Play) (published by Next Move Games / Plan B Games) brings the award-winning tile-placement gameplay of Michael Kiesling’s modern classic to younger players and family tables. Moving away from heavy arithmetic, hidden cards, or direct elimination, this game centers on open drafting, visual tactile appeal, color matching, and spatial planning. The primary gameplay objective revolves around palace beautification: players act as artisan tile-layers competing to draft sets of vibrant, resin-cast Portuguese azulejos (tiles) from circular factory displays and tile their player boards to build rows, columns, and matching color sets for victory points.

The primary mechanical hurdle stems from managing the pattern lines on your player mat without creating waste. Each round, a player drafts all tiles of a single color from a factory display (pushing the leftover colors into the central table pool) and places them onto one of five staging rows. Completed rows transfer a tile onto the mosaic wall during scoring, earning points based on adjacency. For younger kids, the game naturally scales: beginners can play with the core mechanics ignoring the floor line penalties, while the reverse side of the board offers a freeform "gray" wall grid that removes color constraints to let kids create their own mosaic designs. Designed for 2 to 4 players aged 8 and up (playable down to ages 6–7 with simplified family rules), a full match plays out across an engaging 30 to 45 minutes.
