Ascend the scaffolding of Sintra's grand palace, pit the radiant brilliance of daylight against the velvet glow of night, and out-draft your rival artisan in a dedicated head-to-head duel for royal favor.
Azul Duel (designed by Michael Kiesling, published by Next Move Games / Plan B Games, and distributed by Asmodee) reimagines the award-winning mosaic-building system into a focused, highly interactive two-player contest. Having earned renown by tiling the lower halls of King Manuel I's palace, Portugal's two foremost artisans are commissioned to undertake their most ambitious project yet: adorning the grand palace dome and vault ceilings. The primary gameplay objective centers on tile drafting, stacking manipulation, and spatial scoring: two players compete to claim acrylic tiles from shared factory displays and arrange them onto their personal boards according to modular pattern templates, striving to outscore their opponent across daylight and nightfall scoring contrasts before the ceiling is finished.
The primary mechanical hurdle stems from managing a newly introduced stacking mechanic combined with modular dome-plate patterns. Unlike the static staging tracks of the original Azul, players in Azul Duel actively customize their layout each match using double-sided dome-plates, allowing for variable ceiling architecture and shifting scoring conditions every game. During drafting turns, players select matching tiles from the central circular factories, but must carefully plan vertical and horizontal tile layers on their ceiling boards. Choosing when to draft and when to force leftovers onto your opponent becomes even more cutthroat with only two players at the table, as every leftover tile left in the center directly empowers or sabotages your rival. Designed specifically for 2 players aged 10 and up, a complete ceiling duel plays out in a sharp 30 to 45 minutes. To win the commission, you must anticipate your opponent's drafting trajectory, assemble high-value dome patterns, and master the contrast between light and shadow.
