Friday Night Board Games at Gnome Games Green Bay West – August

Board Game Friday Nights for August at Gnome Games Green Bay West are all about the newness! We had a blast with Pop Up Gen Con, but if you couldn’t make it in to try the new games we’re picking some of our favorites to run the rest of the month. Stop in and play a new game every Friday!

Friday Night Game Nights are free and we play every Friday from  6 – 9 at Gnome Games Green Bay West

August 2 – Pop Up Gen Con

(If I typed up all the new games I’d be here all day!)

August 9 – Point Salad

Point Salad is a fast and fun card drafting game for the whole family. There are over 100 ways to score points. Players may use a variety of strategies and every game of Point Salad is unique!

Cards come in six different types of veggies, and the back of each card has a different scoring method. So for instance, one scoring method may award 2 points for every carrot you have, but deduct a point for every onion. By drafting combinations of veggies and point cards that work for your strategy, you can amass the most points and win.

August 16 – Bargain Quest

Bargain Quest is a game of adventure and capitalism for 2-6 players. You and your friends will take on the role of shopkeepers in an RPG town plagued by monsters. You must draft item cards to stock your shelves and arrange your displays to attract the wealthiest heroes to your shop.

After that, the heroes will face off against monstrous threats. If they succeed, fantastic! If they get eaten alive, well, at least nobody will ask for a refund.

Do you have what it takes to be the best shop in town?

August 23 – Walking in Burano

Walking through the island, you will see these vibrant houses on both sides of the canal, as well as the personalized decorations placed by the inhabitants and shopkeepers. The local government has asked you to refurbish a street in their famed city. Use your creativity to amaze both tourists and locals with your masterpiece of design! Assemble buildings of matching colors and gather matching icons from the available cards in the central tableau, using scaffolds if needed as they are being built to attract tourists and locals to them and score Victory Points.

August 30 – Star Trek Chrono-Trek

In Star Trek Chrono-Trek, a time-travel game similar to Chrononauts but set in the Star Trek universe, each player becomes a Star Trek character with a unique identity and a secret mission. During the game, players travel backwards and forwards through history, doing all those things people have always dreamed of using time travel to do: Visiting the great moments of the past, peeking into the future, collecting up artifacts, coming to grips with the paradoxes of time travel, and of course, changing pivotal events and altering the course of history itself.

Explore the history (and alternate history!) of the entire Star Trek universe in this version of Chrononauts. Try to alter history to restore your specific timeline! Maybe you need to ensure that the Federation gets founded, or just retrieve the Orb of Time and some tea. Earl Grey. Hot.

Last Minute Games from Grandpa (the Head Gnome)

The Head Gnome has a couple of surefire games winners for grandparents to give this year

It’s always tough to pick fun, engaging games to share with the grandkids during the holiday season, but I’ve got a couple of surefire winners for the younger grandkids this year.

Unicorns are cool Grandpa

First- we have a pair of Unicorn themed games that my granddaughter finds irresistible – Unicorn Glitterluck and Unicorn Glitterluck – a Party for Rosalie are both one of the games that I get asked for every time we visit “Grandpa Gnome did you bring the unicorn game?”

Unicorn Glitterluck

In a land, far, far away lived four unicorns who were the best of friends. They enjoyed galloping across the soft, billowing clouds, sliding down rainbows and playing with cloud crystals. One day, they noticed a terrible thunderstorm approaching. They thought it would be best to head directly for the sun, and collect as many cloud crystals as possible along the way to keep them safe from the storm. Players start by choosing a colored unicorn and placing their piece on the big blue rain cloud. The player who reaches the sun cloud with the most cloud crystals is the winner. A sparkling die competition for 2-4 players ages 3-99.

Unicorn Glitterluck – A Party for Rosalie

More Unicorn fun!
A new unicorn, baby Rosalie, is coming to Cloudland! The unicorns Glitterluck, Stardust, Marvel Flower, and Magic Swirl want to give Rosalie a fantastic reception and throw a huge welcoming party. Help the unicorns cooperatively find all the friends, get them to the party cloud and collect all ten cloud crystals! Hurry, everything needs to be ready before baby Rosalie arrives at the surprise party. A cooperative movement and collecting game. Includes 5 cute wooden unicorns and 10 extra-large glitter stones. Quick setup and plays in about 15 min. For 2-4 players age 4-99!

  • Help the unicorns cooperatively find all the friends, get them to the party cloud and collect all ten cloud crystals! Hurry before baby Rosalie arrives at the surprise party.
  • A cooperative movement and collecting game for 2-4 players, ages 4-99. Game Time: 15 minutes.
  • In this cooperative game, children either win together when they beat Baby Rosalie to the party with all 10 cloud crystals, or lose together if Baby Rosalie reaches the party first.

One of the really neat things about this game is the conversation about what’s going to be at the party, why Rosalie will be sad when there aren’t enough cupcakes or friends at the party and all sorts of creative imaginative play well beyond what is on the board.

Grandpa – There be Dragons!

For grandkids that are a little older Dragons Breath is a big winner. This is the Kinderspiel Des Jahres (Kids Game of the Year) winner from 2018 and a really fun little gem collecting game.

Dragons’ Breath

The dragon children have found an unusual treasure: a column of ice with sparkling stones frozen inside it. Naturally everyone wants them.

Together with dragon dad the players remove one ice-ring after the other, and melt the ice column. This makes the sparkling stones fall down. But be careful: Only certain sparkling stones can be collected. Who will have the most sparkling stones at the end?

2-4 Players

Ages 5-99

15 mins

Grandparents that are race fans – Monza is a racing game you can play with the grandkids!

Fast cars are always more fun when grandpa and grandma are along for the ride and Monza allows us to play with up to 6 of the grandkids at a time! Plus this one really encourages tactical thinking as part of the game play.

Monza –

Monza helps the players to learn tactical thinking and recognize name colors, but don’t think it’s just for the wee-ones. Even those hard core dirt track racers have to think a bit to bring their car to the checkered flag first.

Monza is a car racing game which encourages tactical thinking for 2 to 6 clever players ages 5 to 99.

Six racing cars are standing on the starting grid, prepared for the big race. But only the player who gets the right colors with the dice and makes clever combinations will be able to move rapidly ahead. Who will make clever combinations and thus use as many colors as thrown with the dice in order to get his or her racing car over the finishing line first?

Monza is a= clever but simple children’s game that combines color recognition and “thinking ahead” skills.

It plays in just 5-10 minutes and takes its name from the Italian city known for its Formula One Grand Prix racing circuit.

Need more great games for under the tree for the grandkids? Stop in and let the Head Gnome, Miss Gnomer or any of the Gnome Games staff guide you to the perfect gift.

Our Staff Picks – a Third Helping!

There are so many interesting games that come out every year it’s often hard to narrow our choices down to one! Whenever you stop into any Gnome Games store you can ask the staff what their favorite game is, and you’ll probably get a different answer every time. Sometimes even within the same day! All of our staff play different games, and we always talk to each other about what we saw that looks cool, so there is always something new to see when you come in.

Nate’s Staff Pick – Sword Crafters

30 minutes
2-5 players
Ages 8+

Have you ever wanted to make your very own 3-D magic sword? Now you can!

In Sword Crafters, each player starts with a hilt. Then take turns dividing and selecting materials. Combine them to forge the highest scoring blade. Blades are judged on length, quality and magic so make sure to select the best materials!

This game is a great quick game that brings all ages to the game table. Younger players will love matching gems and building their awesome swords and more experienced players will enjoy the strategy of dividing and selecting crafting materials! Pick up this Gem and Forge some holiday memories!
– Nate

Colby’s Staff Pick – Concept and Concept for Kids

Take Pictionary and Charades, smash them together and what do you have? Concept! Concept is a fantastic party game that can either be played cooperatively or competitively. The objective is to grab a card, decide on a topic and then get everyone to guess what it is. Sounds a bit like charades huh? The only difference, you are using pictures instead of words! Use tokens to help get the point across. There are tons of different pictures to use including pictures of colors, objects, shapes, etc.

Perhaps you are looking for a game you can play with the young ones too. After all, who doesn’t love a good family game night? Concept for Kids takes the… concept… of Concept and makes it easier for kids to understand. It removes all other topics and focuses exclusively on animals. Instead of reading a word, you have a picture of the animal. Beyond that, the game plays relatively similar! Get the table to guess what animal you have a picture of!

This is the best game you will play with your family and your friends!
– Colby

Jocelyn’s Staff Pick – Sailor Moon Crystal Dice Challenge

Based on the game Button Men the Sailor Moon Crystal Dice Challenge offers new ways to play with lots of fun dice in a quick battle game. Choose a character (there are over 20 in the box!), battle another character, capture their dice or use power ups wisely to win the challenge, and move on to the next challenger! Most matches are quick and last only around 5 minutes. There are optional rules for team play and even rules for larger social play at conventions or parties (even includes a couple lanyards for social play). Lots of cards with beautiful character art from the new series and colorful dice make it a pretty game as well.

Sailor Moon was one of mine and my friends favorite shows. She’s recognized around the world and every fan has their favorite character. In Sailor Moon Crystal Dice Challenge you can battle as your favorite character, or team up with your friends! I think one of the most interesting parts is the way it can be played with large groups at events. I can’t wait to try that out! There haven’t been many Sailor Moon themed games released outside Japan, so if you are a Sailor Moon fan, or like quick play dice games, this is the one – the one named Sailor Moon!
– jocelyn

Adam’s Staff Pick – Star Wars Role Playing Game

For over four decades, the Star Wars Cinematic Universe has captured the imagination of Average Joes and Sci-Fi Nerds alike. Play your own role in shaping that universe with the Fantasy Flight Games: Star Wars RPG! Using FFG’s Narrative Dice System you and your friends can play through scenes and create a dynamic story that puts a personal twist on the adventures you grew up with! Help destroy the original Death Star, lead an imperial strike force to capture the Rebel’s base on Hoth, or lead a band of smugglers through endless shenanigans in the Outer Rim. With three different core books to choose from, you can start with the style that best suits your group. Give it a shot, roll some dice, and may the force be with you!
– Adam

Beckie’s Staff Pick- Dixit

Once we got word from the military that my husband would be stationed in California, we made it a priority to explore and find a good local gaming store. Through luck, some other Wisconsin friends also happened to live in the area, and they showed us a spot to go and relax and meet new people to enjoy our time with.  Dixit was the first game we played with new people that really broke the ice and opened conversation about other games the players enjoyed. It was a gateway game to get to know our new group better and also explore the titles that caught our attention. It was great getting to hear favorite times playing other games. Dixit to me was so much more than just the game, it opens people up to happy memories.
